Great Starts is a program of Parent Trust for
Washington Children.
Parent Trust is a statewide non-profit organization providing
services to children and parents. Call our Family Help Line at
1-800-932-HOPE for parenting information, referral to community
services, and support in difficult times.
The Great Starts Birth & Family Education program is
committed to helping expectant parents prepare for a safe and
satisfying birth experience and to supporting them in their roles as
new parents. We serve the community through unbiased education about
pregnancy, birth, and parenting. We offer information about options,
and assist students in making the choices that match their values
and priorities. We believe that learning about birth empowers
expectant parents. We believe that learning about newborn care and
early parenting helps families get off to a great start.
Originally known as the Seattle Association of Childbirth
Education (SACE), the organization was started by Dr. Virginia
Larson in the early 1950s and offered classes through the YWCA. The
organization incorporated in 1956, and changed its name to
Childbirth Education Association of Seattle in 1968. In June
2004, Childbirth Education Association of Seattle and
Birth Education Northwest merged and in September 2004,
Childbirth Education Association of Seattle became Great Starts
Birth & Family Education. In December 2006, Great Starts merged with
Parent Trust for Washington Children
Great Starts depends on
donations to help fund our programs. Donations are tax
deductible and very much appreciated.
